The original economy of Phoenix consisted primarily of agriculture. Over the last 20 plus years the Phoenix economy has diversified rapidly, changing quickly as the population has grown. Because Phoenix is the state capital many local residents are employed by the state government.

Phoenix area public education has over 30 school districts. The main school for higher education in the Phoenix area is Arizona State University also known as ASU. ASU has its main campuses in Tempe with other campuses in Northwest Phoenix, downtown Phoenix, Mesa and the Arizona college of medicine is located at the downtown Phoenix location. ASU is one of the largest colleges in the US. In 2007 there were over 64,000 students that attended the college.

Phoenix has a large number of public parks and recreation areas. Waterparks are common throughout Phoenix. During the summer months you can find many Phoenix residents there making it easier to deal with the heat. Phoenix has hot summer weather and mild winters. In the summer months there are typically 90 days or so that are over 100 degrees. The hottest months in Phoenix are June through September. Monsoon season starts in July and ends in mid September. Starting in mid October through February-March daily highs range from 60-70 degrees. Phoenix only has 5 days or less per year of temperatures below freezing, usually evenings.
